Dr Fuman Zhao, Senior Process Safety Engineer of PSRG will be presenting on Using risk-based Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) to control combustible dust hazards. A combustible dust normally presents explosion hazards when suspended in air. Dust hazard analysis/control compliance based on Industry-specific NFPA dust standard (e.g., NFPA 61, 484, 655, 664, or 654) prescriptive provisions may create costly but unnecessary overprotection, or turn to be non-applicable for some facilities, e.g., old plants. NFPA 652 allows a performance-based (typically risk-based) compliance option for dust hazards analysis/control with feasible flexibility and reasonable cost. A risk-based DHA is a risk tolerance analysis approach by applying hazardous dust event likelihood and consequence with credible safeguards included. There will be time for Q&A at the end.
